This is *your* wedding day

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

I need to learn to follow my own advice. Besides giving me lots of time for photos, the one thing I try and tell all my clients is, “This is your day. This is not a photo session for family (if that’s not what you want), or a time to act and dress a certain way because it’s the “right” thing to do.” As my favorite Dr. Seuss quote says, “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

Yet, for my own wedding, I found myself acting in ways that I normally wouldn’t because I thought that’s what I *should* do. We had a few last minute guests “surprise” my husband-emailing me only a few weeks in advance asking if they could come. While their intentions were good, and we were so happy to have them, it meant multiple meals, flowers, hotel accommodations and transportation that had to be arranged. The day before my wedding I ended up shuttling family around tourist attractions instead of focusing on us and our errands.

I did all this because my wedding dream revolved around what I thought a wedding should look like, and not what my wedding was supposed to be. Now, yes, there were outside influences (which I will save for another entry) that, um, “helped” (sure, let’s call it that) shape that vision…but once my original vision got altered, I went with it.

My wedding was gorgeous and it was a blast; and I was thrilled with it, but it wasn’t what I originally envisioned. I don’t think about it that often anymore, just the good memories (for which there were many)-and then I came across this blog entry from the great Seth Godin.

I cannot encourage every single one of my clients enough to read this post on the importance of choosing your own dreams.

This is your day, this is your dream, and as he says, “Choose your dreams carefully.”
