Northridge Wedding Photographer ~ Where should we have our session?

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

With lots of portrait (contact us for more info) and engagement sessions coming up, we are often asked for location suggestions. Now, I have many ideas depending on the type of feel that you’re looking for, but these are just some of my favorites, and a few helpful hints, in no particular order:

1. Try and choose a location that means something to you. It can be anywhere; for example, Brian and I had our engagement session in Burbank, but our first choice was actually the lobby of a gorgeous Santa Monica hotel because that’s where we would go for dinner when we had a special event to celebrate. I’ve photographed sessions at restaurants, coffee shops, new homes…Oh, also: Don’t worry if the location you would like isn’t “pretty,” I truly feel that beauty can be found everywhere.

This photo of Ian is one of my favorites of all time; but it was taken in a local park that may not be considered conventionally pretty:

2. Another area I really like is Beverly Hills, specifically, some of the local parks. They’re typically not crowded, easy to find (which may not seem so when I send you the directions after you book your session, but I promise, they are), have plenty of parking, and, provide a huge variety of backgrounds. The two images below were taken at the exact same park not more than 20 feet from each other:

3. I adore shooting around Downtown Los Angeles. The arts district, MOCA, City Hall, Disney Concert Hall; even the middle of the sidewalk on a busy afternoon…you’re spoiled for choice in the area.

4. It’s a little bit of a drive, and there’s a parking fee, but Malibu Creek State Park is well worth both.

5. And if you’re considering the Malibu area, you should consider Leo Carrillo Beach and State Park. It’s an area with a variety of backgrounds in one place and fairly private if you’re like me, and a little on the shyer side when having your photo taken :-).

6. Now, if you love that beach vibe, but want to keep it a little closer to town, check out Topanga State Beach.

7. If the beach isn’t quite your thing, but you like a more natural setting, I highly recommend the Griffith Park area…there are a few specific spots that I love!

8. If you’re not into the natural setting, and are more of a city person; I’ve got you covered as well! There are some very unique areas in and around Hollywood; some with fantastic architectural characteristics and original, edgy grafitti art.

I haven’t forgotten about my Orange County families and couples! If we’re doing your session in OC, just send me an email or give me a call and we can find the perfect spot for you!

I hope that these suggestions help get you started! When we discuss your portrait session we can talk about what feel you’re going for and go from there! Just a quick note: some of these places have photography restrictions and permit requirements-if there’s an area that you’re interested in, let me know and I’d be happy to look into for you before our session.

And, don’t forget due to an incredibly busy summer, we’re only doing holiday portrait sessions in October and November this year. Weekends are booking up quickly so contact us for more info!

Hollywood Wedding Photographer ~ Paula and Mike ~ The Wedding ~

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

You know a wedding is going to be good when the Bride tells you, “the location is hard to find, just meet us at the base of the hill and we’ll take you there.” Paula and Mike did for their wedding what Brian and I used to dream of doing-picking an idyllic locaiton and just getting married. No fuss, no drama, no participants…just the two of them, their minister, and us. Afterwards, we went up to the Griffith Observatory where they were filming The Gangster Squad. Although the Observatory and surrounding grounds were closed to the public today, the crew was nice enough to let us on set (and use some of their props as backgrounds) to capture some wedding portraits (those people in the background of some of the photos? Extras in 1940′s period costume).
